What is GEO? A simple guide for Singapore business owners
Last updated: 13 October 2026
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the work of getting your brand recommended in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini. SEO helps you rank in a list of links. GEO helps you become the answer. Soodo, a Shopify & GEO agency in Singapore, builds GEO into every Shopify store it creates.
What’s the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO (search engine optimisation) is about ranking in Google’s list of blue links. GEO is about being named inside the written answer an AI tool gives. The skills overlap, but the finish line is different: with SEO you win a click, with GEO you win a recommendation.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Analogy | A billboard on the highway | A personal shopper |
| Where it shows | A list of 10 links | One written answer |
| Goal | Rank high | Be named and cited |
| What wins | Keywords, backlinks | Clear facts, structured data, trusted mentions |
| How the customer acts | Compares several sites | Often shortlists only the brands the AI names |
| What you measure | Rankings, clicks | Mentions, citations, AI referral traffic |
Why does GEO matter for Singapore ecommerce brands?
Shoppers increasingly ask AI tools before they buy. Instead of typing “waterproof backpack” into Google and opening ten tabs, they ask ChatGPT “What’s the best waterproof backpack for commuting in Singapore under $150?” and get a short, confident answer with a handful of brand names.
Google has moved the same way. AI Overviews now sit above the normal results for many searches, and Google AI Mode answers whole questions in a conversation. Even customers who never open ChatGPT are reading AI-written summaries before they reach your website.
The catch is that an AI answer names a few brands, not ten. If your store isn’t one of them, you’re not on page two; you’re simply not in the conversation. For Singapore SMEs competing with regional marketplaces and big international brands, GEO is one of the few places where a well-organised small brand can still punch above its weight, because the AI cares about clear, trustworthy information more than ad budget.
How do AI search tools find and pick brands?
Most AI assistants answer shopping questions in two ways:
- From what they already learned. Large language models are trained on huge amounts of public text. Brands that are mentioned often and consistently across the web are more likely to be “known” by the model.
- By searching the web live. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode look up fresh pages for the question, read them, and write an answer, often with links to the sources they used.
In the live-search case, the AI behaves a bit like a very fast researcher. It looks for pages that answer the exact question, that it can read easily, and that seem trustworthy. Then it pulls the clearest facts into its answer. That’s why the way your pages are written and structured matters so much.
What makes an AI tool more likely to recommend your brand?
- It can read your site. Your pages load quickly, aren’t blocked to AI crawlers, and use structured data (schema) so products, prices and reviews are machine-readable.
- Your pages state clear facts. Prices, specs, sizes, materials, delivery times and returns written in plain text, not hidden in images or vague marketing lines.
- Your pages answer real questions. Content that directly answers what customers ask, such as “Is this suitable for sensitive skin?” or “How long does delivery take?”
- Other sites mention you. Reviews, directories, press, blog round-ups, forums and social posts. AI tools look for independent confirmation, not just what you say about yourself.
- Your details are consistent everywhere. The same brand name, description, address and contact details on your site, Google Business Profile, marketplaces and social profiles.
- Your information is fresh. Up-to-date prices, stock and dates. Out-of-date pages give the AI a reason to pick someone else.
What does GEO look like on a Shopify store?
GEO isn’t a plugin you switch on. It’s a set of decisions across your store. On a Soodo build, it usually covers:
- Product pages written for questions, not just keywords. A clear one-line summary of what the product is and who it’s for, followed by specs, materials, sizing and care in plain text.
- Product FAQs. Short questions and answers on each key product, based on what customers actually ask your team on WhatsApp and email.
- Collection page introductions. A few sentences that explain the range, so AI tools understand what you sell and for whom.
- Structured data. Product, offer, review and organisation schema, so AI tools and Google can read price, availability and ratings reliably.
- Clear policy pages. Shipping, returns and warranty written in plain language with real numbers (days, costs, conditions).
- A strong About page. Who’s behind the brand, where you’re based, and why people should trust you.
- Crawler access. Checking that your store isn’t accidentally blocking the bots that AI tools use to read the web.
- Off-site presence. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent marketplace listings, and genuine reviews.
Because Shopify already outputs structured product data and connects to its own AI shopping channels, a well-set-up Shopify store starts with an advantage. A badly set-up one, with thin descriptions and specs buried in images, throws that advantage away.
A GEO checklist you can start this week
- Write down 10 questions your customers ask before buying. Use your WhatsApp chats, emails and reviews.
- Ask those questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Note which brands are named and which pages are cited.
- Fix your top 5 product pages first. Add a plain-text summary, full specs and a short FAQ that answers those questions.
- Put prices, delivery times and return terms in text. Not only in banners or images.
- Check your Google Business Profile and marketplace listings. Make sure names, descriptions and contact details match your website.
- Ask happy customers for reviews. On Google and on your product pages.
- Repeat the AI test every month. Track whether you start appearing, and for which questions.

How can I check if AI recommends my brand?
Ask ChatGPT the question your customer would ask, e.g. “What’s the best [product] in Singapore?” Try 5 variations. Note who gets named. Or book Soodo’s free AI Readiness Audit.
How do I measure GEO over time?
- A monthly prompt log. The same set of customer questions, asked in the same AI tools each month, with a note of whether your brand is named or cited.
- AI referral traffic. In Shopify Analytics or Google Analytics, look for visits from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Brand searches. People who hear your name from an AI often search for you directly afterwards, so rising branded searches are a good sign.
- Sales conversations. Ask new customers how they found you. “ChatGPT recommended you” is becoming a real answer.
AI answers change from one day to the next and from one person to the next, so look at the trend over a few months rather than any single answer.
Common GEO myths
- “Someone can guarantee ChatGPT will recommend me.” No one can honestly guarantee AI placements. Good GEO improves your chances; it can’t promise a spot.
- “GEO is just stuffing keywords into AI-friendly pages.” AI tools reward clear, specific, useful information. Keyword stuffing makes pages worse for people and machines.
- “One file or plugin will fix it.” Files like llms.txt can help AI tools find your key pages, but they’re a small part of the picture. Content, structure and reputation do the heavy lifting.
- “GEO is only for big brands.” Small brands with clear, focused information often get named for specific questions, especially local or niche ones.
- “I have to choose between SEO and GEO.” You don’t. Most GEO work also improves SEO and conversion.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on good SEO. A store that’s fast, well-structured and trusted does better in both.
Does Shopify help with GEO?
Shopify’s structured product data and built-in AI shopping channels give stores a head start, but only if the store is set up properly. That’s what Soodo does on every build.
GEO terms explained

Frequently asked questions
How long does GEO take to work?
Fixes to your own site can be picked up by AI tools that search the web live within weeks. Being “known” by the models themselves, and earning mentions on other sites, takes longer. Think in months, not days.
Do I need to rewrite my whole website for GEO?
No. Start with the pages that matter most: your best-selling products, key collections, and your shipping and returns information.
Does GEO work for small Singapore brands?
Yes. AI tools often name smaller brands for specific or local questions when those brands have clear, trustworthy information.
Is GEO included in a Soodo store build?
Yes. Every new store, revamp and migration from Soodo includes the GEO foundations: structured data, clear product information and crawler access. Ongoing GEO work is available through the GEO Growth Retainer.
