What is GEO?

What is GEO? A simple guide for Singapore business owners

Last updated: 13 October 2026

Short answer: GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the work of getting your brand recommended in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini. SEO helps you rank in a list of links. GEO helps you become the answer. Soodo, a Singapore Shopify agency, builds every Shopify store it creates to be found in AI search.

What’s the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is about ranking in Google’s list of blue links. GEO is about being named inside the written answer an AI tool gives. The skills overlap, but the finish line is different: with SEO you win a click, with GEO you win a recommendation.

Why does GEO matter for Singapore ecommerce brands?

Shoppers increasingly ask AI tools before they buy. Instead of typing “waterproof backpack” into Google and opening ten tabs, they ask ChatGPT “What’s the best waterproof backpack for commuting in Singapore under $150?” and get a short, confident answer with a handful of brand names.

Google has moved the same way. AI Overviews now sit above the normal results for many searches, and Google AI Mode answers whole questions in a conversation. Even customers who never open ChatGPT are reading AI-written summaries before they reach your website.

The catch is that an AI answer names a few brands, not ten. If your store isn’t one of them, you’re not on page two; you’re simply not in the conversation. For Singapore SMEs competing with regional marketplaces and big international brands, GEO is one of the few places where a well-organised small brand can still punch above its weight, because the AI cares about clear, trustworthy information more than ad budget.

How do AI search tools find and pick brands?

Most AI assistants answer shopping questions in two ways:

  • From what they already learned. Large language models are trained on huge amounts of public text. Brands that are mentioned often and consistently across the web are more likely to be “known” by the model.
  • By searching the web live. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode look up fresh pages for the question, read them, and write an answer, often with links to the sources they used.

In the live-search case, the AI behaves a bit like a very fast researcher. It looks for pages that answer the exact question, that it can read easily, and that seem trustworthy. Then it pulls the clearest facts into its answer. That’s why the way your pages are written and structured matters so much.

What makes an AI tool more likely to recommend your brand?

  • It can read your site. Your pages load quickly, aren’t blocked to AI crawlers, and use structured data (schema) so products, prices and reviews are machine-readable.
  • Your pages state clear facts. Prices, specs, sizes, materials, delivery times and returns written in plain text, not hidden in images or vague marketing lines.
  • Your pages answer real questions. Content that directly answers what customers ask, such as “Is this suitable for sensitive skin?” or “How long does delivery take?”
  • Other sites mention you. Reviews, directories, press, blog round-ups, forums and social posts. AI tools look for independent confirmation, not just what you say about yourself.
  • Your details are consistent everywhere. The same brand name, description, address and contact details on your site, Google Business Profile, marketplaces and social profiles.
  • Your information is fresh. Up-to-date prices, stock and dates. Out-of-date pages give the AI a reason to pick someone else.

AI-ready Shopify stores

Is your Shopify store ready for AI shopping assistants?

Your Shopify store may already be live in AI shopping channels, yet still be left out of AI recommendations if its product data is incomplete. Soodo handles the technical side of GEO on your Shopify store. Every new store and migration from Soodo is set up so ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot can understand, filter, trust and reach your products. For live stores, it can be included in a Shopify revamp. Long-term GEO growth takes more than technical work, so for ongoing content and off-site authority Soodo works with specialist SEO and GEO partners.

Shopify has made eligible stores discoverable and shoppable inside AI channels through Agentic Storefronts, with no integration work. Being live is the easy part. An AI assistant shows about 3 products above the fold, compared with 10 or more results on a search page, and your store’s data decides whether you get one of those slots. As Shopify told partners at its Singapore Partner Study Hall in October 2026, Shopify structures and standardises product data, “but we can’t standardise what isn’t there”. Shoppers who arrive from AI assistants land on the product page ready to buy, so the product page is where this work pays off.

Shopify Partner

What does an AI-ready Shopify store need?

Soodo works through five pillars on every new build and migration.

  • 1. Comprehension

    Can AI understand your products?

Product titles, descriptions with real specs, use cases and audience, variant names, image alt text and brand fields. Soodo also checks that key facts still show with JavaScript turned off.

  • 2. Taxonomy

Can AI filter to your products?

Every product in the most specific Shopify product category, with every category attribute filled in, such as colour, material and size. One missing attribute can mean zero visibility.

  • 3. Brand and policy facts

Does AI know who you are?

A review and setup of your Shopify Knowledge Base: shipping, returns, lead times, minimums and brand story, published as approved facts so AI does not have to guess.

  • 4. Authority

    Will AI trust you?

Reviews and rating schema, consistent numbers across the site, press coverage, and mentions on Reddit, YouTube, directories and Google Business Profile.

  • 5. Accessibility

    Can AI reach your store?

Your robots.txt.liquid file, bot-blocking apps, AI crawler access tests, Google and Microsoft Merchant Center connections, sitemaps and Bing indexing. Bing feeds ChatGPT search and Copilot.

  • Plus

Your Agentic Storefronts settings in Shopify admin, including catalog sharing and checkout for each AI channel. Product page and collection page structure for AI citation. Structured data for products, FAQs, collections and your organisation.

What does GEO look like on a Shopify store?

GEO isn’t a plugin you switch on. It’s a set of decisions across your store. On a Soodo build, it usually covers:

  • Product pages written for questions, not just keywords. A clear one-line summary of what the product is and who it’s for, followed by specs, materials, sizing and care in plain text.
  • Product FAQs. Short questions and answers on each key product, based on what customers actually ask your team on WhatsApp and email.
  • Collection page introductions. A few sentences that explain the range, so AI tools understand what you sell and for whom.
  • Structured data. Product, offer, review and organisation schema, so AI tools and Google can read price, availability and ratings reliably.
  • Clear policy pages. Shipping, returns and warranty written in plain language with real numbers (days, costs, conditions).
  • A strong About page. Who’s behind the brand, where you’re based, and why people should trust you.
  • Crawler access. Checking that your store isn’t accidentally blocking the bots that AI tools use to read the web.
  • Off-site presence. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent marketplace listings, and genuine reviews.

Because Shopify already outputs structured product data and connects to its own AI shopping channels, a well-set-up Shopify store starts with an advantage. A badly set-up one, with thin descriptions and specs buried in images, throws that advantage away.

A GEO checklist you can start this week

  1. Write down 10 questions your customers ask before buying. Use your WhatsApp chats, emails and reviews.
  2. Ask those questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Note which brands are named and which pages are cited.
  3. Fix your top 5 product pages first. Add a plain-text summary, full specs and a short FAQ that answers those questions.
  4. Put prices, delivery times and return terms in text. Not only in banners or images.
  5. Check your Google Business Profile and marketplace listings. Make sure names, descriptions and contact details match your website.
  6. Ask happy customers for reviews. On Google and on your product pages.
  7. Repeat the AI test every month. Track whether you start appearing, and for which questions.

How can I check if AI recommends my brand?

Ask ChatGPT the question your customer would ask, such as “What’s the best skincare brand for sensitive skin in Singapore?” or “Where can I buy a waterproof backpack in Singapore?” Try 5 variations. Note who gets named. Or apply to work with Soodo.

How do I measure GEO over time?

  • A monthly prompt log. The same set of customer questions, asked in the same AI tools each month, with a note of whether your brand is named or cited.
  • AI referral traffic. In Shopify Analytics or Google Analytics, look for visits from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
  • Brand searches. People who hear your name from an AI often search for you directly afterwards, so rising branded searches are a good sign.
  • Sales conversations. Ask new customers how they found you. “ChatGPT recommended you” is becoming a real answer.

AI answers change from one day to the next and from one person to the next, so look at the trend over a few months rather than any single answer.

Common GEO myths

  • “Someone can guarantee ChatGPT will recommend me.” No one can honestly guarantee AI placements. Good GEO improves your chances; it can’t promise a spot.
  • “GEO is just stuffing keywords into AI-friendly pages.” AI tools reward clear, specific, useful information. Keyword stuffing makes pages worse for people and machines.
  • “One file or plugin will fix it.” Files like llms.txt can help AI tools find your key pages, but they’re a small part of the picture. Content, structure and reputation do the heavy lifting.
  • “GEO is only for big brands.” Small brands with clear, focused information often get named for specific questions, especially local or niche ones.
  • “I have to choose between SEO and GEO.” You don’t. Most GEO work also improves SEO and conversion.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on good SEO. A store that’s fast, well-structured and trusted does better in both.

Does Shopify help with GEO?

Shopify’s structured product data and built-in AI shopping channels give stores a head start, but only if the store is set up properly. That’s what Soodo does on every build.

GEO terms explained

  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation): improving how often and how accurately AI tools mention and recommend your brand.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation): a similar term, focused on being the direct answer to a question.
  • LLM (large language model): the technology behind ChatGPT, Gemini and similar tools.
  • AI Overviews: the AI-written summaries Google shows above normal search results.
  • Google AI Mode: Google’s conversational search mode that answers full questions with AI.
  • Citation: a link to your page that an AI tool shows as a source for its answer.
  • Structured data (schema): code that labels information on your page, such as price, availability and reviews, so machines can read it.
  • llms.txt: a simple text file that points AI tools to a site’s most important pages.

Frequently asked questions

How long does GEO take to work?

Fixes to your own site can be picked up by AI tools that search the web live within weeks. Being “known” by the models themselves, and earning mentions on other sites, takes longer. Think in months, not days.

Do I need to rewrite my whole website for GEO?

No. Start with the pages that matter most: your best-selling products, key collections, and your shipping and returns information.

Does GEO work for small Singapore brands?

Yes. AI tools often name smaller brands for specific or local questions when those brands have clear, trustworthy information.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping through AI assistants. A customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot what to buy, and the assistant can recommend products and, on supported channels, complete the checkout. Shopify connects stores to these channels through Agentic Storefronts and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the standard that lets AI assistants check out with your store’s own rules.

Isn’t my Shopify store already AI-ready?

Your Shopify store may already be live in AI channels, but being live only gets you found. AI assistants show about 3 products per answer, so the stores with the most complete product data, categories, attributes and brand facts get recommended.

Is AI-ready setup included when Soodo builds my store?

Yes. AI-ready setup is included in every new Shopify store and every migration to Shopify that Soodo delivers, at no extra cost.

My store is already live. Can Soodo make it AI-ready?

It can be. The technical setup for AI search can be included in a Shopify revamp when it is part of the agreed scope. Every new build and migration includes it as standard.

What is the difference between Soodo’s GEO setup and GEO Growth Partners?

Soodo gets the technical side of your Shopify store right as part of a new build or migration, or a revamp that includes it. GEO Growth Partners is ongoing work on new content, mentions and authority, delivered by specialist partners Soodo refers you to, while Soodo keeps your store’s technical side in shape.
