How is it calculated?

  • Monthly orders = sessions × conversion rate
  • Monthly revenue = orders × average order value (AOV)
  • Extra revenue = revenue at your target conversion rate minus revenue at your current rate
  • Extra gross profit = extra revenue × your gross margin

Conversion rate here means Shopify’s definition: orders divided by sessions. You’ll find it in Shopify Analytics > Reports > Online store conversion rate. Use the same 30-day period for all three numbers.

What is a good Shopify conversion rate?

Shopify-specific benchmarks put the average around 1.4%, with the top 10% of stores above 4.7%. Rates vary a lot by industry, device and traffic source, so compare yourself by channel and device, not just the blended number. Our Shopify conversion rate benchmarks explain how.

Why does conversion rate matter more than more traffic?

Doubling your traffic usually means doubling your ad spend. Raising conversion rate gets more sales from visitors you are already paying for. It also lowers your cost per order, so your ads go further. Use our ROAS calculator to see the effect on ad returns.

How do you actually improve it?

Start with the free Shopify optimisation checklist. Then focus on the pages that make money: product pages, cart and checkout, and mobile speed. See how to increase Shopify conversion rate and Shopify product page optimisation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my Shopify conversion rate?

Divide orders by sessions and multiply by 100. For example, 25 orders from 1,000 sessions is 2.5%. Shopify shows this in Analytics > Reports.

Is a 2% conversion rate good for Shopify?

It’s above the commonly cited Shopify average of about 1.4%. Whether it’s good for you depends on your industry, price point and traffic mix.

Does the calculator guarantee these results?

No. It shows what a given conversion rate would be worth. It doesn’t predict that any particular change will reach it.

Why use gross margin and not just revenue?

Because extra revenue is not extra profit. Gross margin shows what the improvement actually adds to the business after product costs.
