Shopify vs WooCommerce in Singapore (2026): Cost, Effort and When to Switch
Short answer: For most Singapore SMEs selling physical products, Shopify is the better choice. You pay a predictable monthly fee, and Shopify handles hosting, security, checkout and updates. WooCommerce is the better choice if you already run a content-heavy WordPress site, have a developer on hand, and want full control of the code. The real difference is not the licence price. It is who maintains the store: on Shopify, Shopify does. On WooCommerce, you or your developer do.
Soodo is a Singapore Shopify agency, so we have an obvious bias. This guide points out where WooCommerce is honestly the better fit.
What is the difference between Shopify and WooCommerce?
Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. You rent the software, and Shopify runs the servers, the checkout and the security patches. WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress website into a shop. You choose your own hosting and install your own plugins, and you are responsible for keeping all of them updated and compatible.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Hosted platform (software as a service) | Free plugin for WordPress (self-hosted) |
| Hosting | Included | You buy and manage it |
| Security and updates | Handled by Shopify | Your responsibility (WordPress core, theme, every plugin) |
| Checkout | Shopify Checkout, built in | Built from plugins and your payment gateway |
| Payments in Singapore | Shopify Payments (cards, PayNow*) or third-party gateways | Stripe, HitPay and similar plugins |
| Customisation | Themes plus apps, with custom code within Shopify’s rules | Almost unlimited (it is open source) |
| Best for | Product brands that want to sell, not manage servers | Content-led sites with in-house developer support |

How much does each cost in Singapore?
Shopify costs more upfront each month but is easier to forecast. WooCommerce looks free, but hosting, premium plugins and developer time add up.
Shopify running costs (2026, billed in SGD):
- Basic: S$39/month (S$29/month billed annually)
- Grow: S$132/month (S$99/month billed annually)
- Advanced: S$531/month (S$399/month billed annually)
- Shopify Payments card rates: about 3.0–3.2% plus S$0.50 per transaction, depending on plan
- A premium theme (optional) costs a one-off fee, and apps range from free to tens of US dollars a month each

WooCommerce running costs:
- Plugin licence: free
- Managed WordPress hosting that performs reliably: roughly SGD 40–200/month
- Premium extensions (subscriptions, bookings, shipping rules): usually charged per year, per plugin
- Developer time for updates, plugin conflicts and security fixes: the cost most people leave out

Which is easier to run day to day?
Shopify. On WooCommerce, every update to WordPress, the theme or a plugin can break something else, and someone has to test it. On Shopify, the platform updates itself, and apps sit outside the core code, so one app rarely takes the whole store down. Most WooCommerce owners we speak to aren’t unhappy with WooCommerce itself. They are tired of being their own IT department.
Which is better for SEO and AI search?
Both can rank well. WooCommerce gives you more control (for example, full URL structure and any SEO plugin). Shopify has some fixed URL patterns, such as /products/ and /collections/, but covers the basics well and loads quickly on its own infrastructure. For AI search (GEO), what matters most on either platform is clear product information, structured data and reviews. Our guide to Shopify AI search optimisation explains what AI assistants actually read.
When is WooCommerce the better choice?
Stay on, or choose, WooCommerce if:
- Your site is mainly content (a blog, publication or course) and the shop is a small add-on
- You have a reliable WordPress developer on retainer
- You need deep custom logic that Shopify’s apps and checkout rules can’t support
- Your catalogue is tiny and your traffic is low, so hosting and maintenance stay cheap
When should a Singapore business switch to Shopify?
Consider moving when:
- Plugin updates regularly break your checkout or layout
- Your site slows down during sales or campaigns
- You spend more on developer fixes than on growing the business
- You want to add marketplaces, POS or international selling without stitching plugins together
A migration moves your products, customers, order history and URLs. The step that protects your Google rankings is the 301 redirect map. Our WooCommerce to Shopify guide covers the full process.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify cheaper than WooCommerce in Singapore?
Not on licence fees, because WooCommerce is free. Once you add hosting (roughly SGD 40–200/month), premium plugins and developer time for maintenance, the total cost of owning a WooCommerce store is often similar to or higher than Shopify Basic or Grow, which start at S$39/month.
Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify without losing my Google rankings?
Yes, if every old URL is 301-redirected to its new Shopify URL and your page titles and content carry over. Most lost rankings after a migration come from missing redirects, not from Shopify itself.
Does WooCommerce or Shopify support PayNow?
Both can accept PayNow through local payment gateways. On Shopify, check the current Shopify Payments options and gateways such as HitPay. On WooCommerce, PayNow comes through a gateway plugin.
Is WordPress the same as WooCommerce?
No. WordPress is the website system. WooCommerce is a free plugin that adds a shop to it. “WordPress vs Shopify” for ecommerce really means “WooCommerce vs Shopify”.
Which is better for a small Singapore business just starting out?
For most product sellers, Shopify, because you can launch without managing hosting or security. If you only sell a few items from a content site you already have, adding WooCommerce can be enough.
