Shopify vs a Custom-Built Ecommerce Website: What Singapore SMEs Should Know (2026)
Short answer: For most Singapore SMEs selling products online, Shopify is the safer and cheaper choice. You launch in weeks, checkout, hosting and security are already done, and many developers can work on it. A fully custom-coded ecommerce site (for example, one built with Laravel, React or a bespoke CMS) makes sense only when your business model truly cannot fit an ecommerce platform, and you have budget to keep a development team long-term. Most of the time, what businesses actually want is a custom design on Shopify, not custom software.
If you are comparing a quote from a web development firm with one from a Shopify agency, this guide helps you compare them like for like.
What is the difference?
A custom-built site is software written for you from scratch, or on a framework. Your developer builds the product catalogue, cart, checkout, payment integration, admin panel and hosting setup, and has to maintain all of it.
A Shopify site runs on Shopify’s platform. The cart, checkout, payments, admin, hosting and security already exist. Your agency designs and builds the storefront (the theme) and connects the apps and systems you need. With custom theme work, a Shopify store can look and behave entirely like your brand.
| Shopify (with custom design) | Custom-coded website | |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout and payments | Built in and maintained by Shopify | Built and maintained by your developer |
| Hosting and security | Included | Your responsibility (server, patches, backups) |
| Time to launch | Usually weeks | Usually months |
| Who can maintain it | Any Shopify developer or agency | Usually only the team that built it |
| Ongoing cost | Monthly plan plus apps | Hosting plus a developer retainer for fixes and updates |
| Flexibility | High, within Shopify’s rules | Unlimited, at a price |
| Lock-in risk | Platform (you can export your data) | Developer (the code depends on them) |
How much does each cost in Singapore?
The build price is only part of the cost. Compare the total cost over three years.
Shopify: Soodo’s new Shopify store builds start from SGD 4,500 (from 6 weeks). Running costs are the Shopify plan (Basic from S$39/month, Grow S$132/month, Advanced S$531/month, with lower rates on annual billing), any paid apps, and payment processing fees. Custom-coded: Custom quotes vary widely because you are paying for software development, not setup. When you compare quotes, check whether the price includes:
- Payment gateway integration (cards, PayNow) and the security work needed to accept payments
- An admin panel your team can use without a developer
- Hosting, monitoring and backups
- Bug fixes and security updates after launch, and for how long
- Who owns the source code and the server accounts
If the custom quote looks cheaper, it usually leaves out the post-launch maintenance.
When does a custom-coded site make sense?
Go custom when:
- Your core product is the software itself (a marketplace, booking engine or configurator that is the business)
- You have unusual pricing, checkout or fulfilment logic that ecommerce platforms cannot handle even with apps or Shopify Functions
- You have, or will hire, an in-house development team to own the code for years
Even then, many brands use Shopify for the commerce parts and custom code for the rest. Shopify’s headless setup lets you build a custom front end on top of Shopify’s checkout and back office.
When is Shopify the better choice?
Choose Shopify when:
- You sell physical or digital products and want to launch within a quarter
- You want your team to update products, prices and content without a developer
- You don’t want to be tied to the one developer who wrote your code
- You may want to add marketplaces, POS, B2B or international selling later
Shopify does not mean a generic look. A custom Shopify theme gives you a unique design and layout while keeping Shopify’s checkout and infrastructure.
What should you ask before signing either quote?
- Who owns the code, domain, hosting and admin accounts after launch?
- What happens if your developer becomes unavailable?
- What is included in post-launch support, and what does it cost after that?
- How will product data, customers and SEO be moved if you change provider later?
- Can you see live stores they have built, ideally with similar products to yours?

Frequently asked questions
Is a custom ecommerce website better than Shopify?
Only if your business needs features no ecommerce platform can support. For most Singapore product brands, a custom-designed Shopify store gives the same unique look with lower running costs, faster launch and less risk.
Can a Shopify store look completely custom?
Yes. Shopify themes can be designed and coded from scratch. Customers see your brand, not Shopify. Only the checkout follows Shopify’s structure, which also helps conversion because shoppers trust it.
Do I own my Shopify store?
You own your content, product data, customer data and any custom theme code that has been paid for. You rent the platform. You can export your data if you ever leave.
How long does a custom-coded ecommerce site take compared to Shopify?
A Shopify build with custom design usually takes weeks. Soodo’s new store builds start from 6 weeks. A fully custom-coded store usually takes several months because the cart, checkout and admin have to be built and tested.
What is the cheapest way to start selling online in Singapore?
Shopify’s Basic plan with a free theme is the cheapest way to start with your own store. Marketplaces such as Shopee and Lazada cost less upfront but charge commission on every sale. Compare them with our Shopee and Lazada fee calculator.
